Kinglake travelled to Thornton on Saturday to take on Thornton-Eildon with Kinglake Thornton by 36 points and keeping their final five hopes alive. Thornton haven’t won a senior footy game for 29 rounds.
Kinglake netball a, b and d grades also won with Thornton-Eildon winning reserves football. Thornton don’t field c grade netball.
The Lakers were off to a strong start kicking two goals four whilst keeping Thornton scoreless for the opening quarter. Whilst Thornton had five centre clearances to just one from Kinglake it was the lakers with 11 inside 50s to only two from Thornton who were unable to capitalise with Kinglake’s defence keeping Thornton-Eildon scoreless.
Thornton did manage to get back during the quarter and frustrated Kinglake’s scoring opportunities.
At quarter time Kinglake coach Brad Wilkinson told his players “to lower their eyes more and spot them (Thornton players) up.”

“Show me something, show these people something…on our terms, take it on” Thornton-Eildon coach David Stirling told his players during their quarter time huddle.
The Lakers had seven scoring shots to Thornton’s two in the second quarter though yet again Kinglake’s inaccuracy in front of goal would see them kick three goals four to two straight goals from Thornton.
Kinglake’s tackle rate improved to 14 (from seven in the first quarter) while the Lakers struggled with centre clearances managing only two to five from Thornton, the shinboners couldn’t -again- capitalise on the clearances as Kinglake took control of the match.
At halftime Kinglake held a 26-point lead.
The intensity lifted during the third quarter with Kinglake keeping up defensive pressure, restricting Thornton to just one point for the quarter though Kinglake’s continuing inaccuracy in front of goal would be costly, kicking two goals three.
Thornton staged a final quarter comeback, kicking three goals three to Kinglake’s two goals four but it wasn’t enough with Kinglake establishing an early lead Thornton-Eildon couldn’t catch up as Kinglake won by 36 points and now sit just outside the five in sixth on the ladder and are a chance to play finals.
Thornton-Eildon sit ninth (last) on the ladder and won’t play finals this year.
If Powelltown defeat Alexandra at Powelltown, Kinglake will be in fifth position, a position they need to maintain if they wish to play finals in 2017.
The reserves saw the return of retired players Dan Maloney and Cameron Caine who stepped in to ensure the reserves had a full complement of players. Although losing to Thornton-Eildon the Kinglake reserves have worked hard to put ‘a team on the park’ with player numbers down on previous years.
Next week, Saturday July 15 Kinglake, have a bye with the Reverse Draw being held on Saturday night from 5:30pm at the club rooms while Thornton-Eildon play Yarra Junction at Thornton. Kinglake play Powelltown at home (July 22) the following week, July 22.
