Google empowers – not destroys – public ‘right to know’

Despite claims to contrary, Google (and social media generally ) have not destroyed the advertising “rivers of gold” that media outlets once relied upon for revenue. Google has actually empowered independent journalism. They’ve just destroyed it for media moguls.

We’ve earned more income from Google in 12 months than any media outlet ever paid. And it’s all thanks to Google. A web mogul one may argue.

After writing for almost 20 years local football, cricket and other news for the Alexandra Standard, Yea Chronicle, Whittlesea Review, North Central Review, Mountain Views Mail, Upper Yarra Mail, Mountain Monthly, Town Crier, Diamond Valley Leader, Whittlesea Leader among other publications none could “afford to pay,” or were willing to pay.

Strange, given they all earn revenue from advertising in their print editions.

With the support of Google Asia-Pacific, Kinglake Ranges News is now earning enough revenue to expand operations.

The expanded operations with the support of Press Patron will enable Kinglake Ranges News and Geelan Media to take our news service “to the next level.”

For journalists – especially freelance ones – who’ve been ripped off, underpaid and sold second-hand Google is a saviour.

No need to worry about advertisers or ad contracts, Google take care of that.

If you’re an up and coming journalist filing for your local suburban or rural newspaper(s) ask to be paid at MEAA rates. If they won’t, don’t bother filing. Start your own news site. Join the union. Speak to Google Asia-Pacific.

Yes. Google actually is supporting independent, freelance journalists.

Google’s head office in “Silicon Valley” California now calls to help and Kinglake Ranges News has a working relationship with Google in California and Asia-Pacific region.

No doubt it is a move by Google as western nations hold inquiries into the press, media and the google affect on the media in their Parliaments.

Ironically, Google is cutting out the media moguls and supporting grass-roots journalism at the same time they’ve become one of the world’s most powerful companies and a mogul itself.

The print-only model died when the internet was opened to the public (the editor of Kinglake Ranges News, Ashley Geelan was already using it via amateur ‘packet’ radio) in 1994.

Google [USA] will also present a paper about this and changes to media laws [in the US] contributed to by the editor of Kinglake Ranges News, Ashley Geelan, to the US Congress in a few days time.

The full paper will be published after it is presented to US Congress.

Kinglake Ranges News and Geelan Media have commercial arrangements with Google LLC,1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, California, 94043 USA; Google Asia-Pacific, 48 Pirrama Rd, Pyrmont NSW 2009; and Press Patron, Auckland, New Zealand.
