Exhibitions, concerts, fitness sessions, workshops and even learning how to get on Facebook are some of the events lined up for older residents in Nillumbik Shire this October.
The Nillumbik Seniors Festival, which runs throughout the month, is an initiative between Nillumbik Shire Council and the State Government’s Victorian Seniors Festival.
Mayor Peter Clarke said the Shire was delighted to support the state-wide festival through its own suite of events.
“Something we’re very proud of in Nillumbik is our high life expectancy rate in comparison to the Victorian average,” Clarke said.
“We’re living a lot longer – so let’s have fun, keep fit and active, and make our golden years even more glorious.”
Community Services Chair Jane Ashton also paid tribute to the vital role older residents play in making the Shire a great place to live and visit.
“So many give up their time to volunteer, not only at clubs and non-profit organisations but to many Council-run programs. We have so many older unsung heroes in our community,” Ashton said.
The month-long festival also includes the Council’s Volunteer Expo where older residents can check out what volunteering opportunities are available, as well as a number of morning and afternoon teas, craft sessions and even a supermarket tour to learn how to understand food labels.
Seniors can travel free on all public transport for eight days, and there will also be outings to familiarise themselves with trains, trams and buses as well as using Myki.
A community safety forum with Victoria Police, CFA and the Council will provide tips on personal safety and how to reduce crime.
