Yarra Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for public assistance following a theft of a motor vehicle in Richmond last Thursday.

Police have been told a couple were delivering papers along Mary Street around 7:10am near Abinger Road when the incident occurred.

The 70-year-old male driver got out of the vehicle, a silver Kia sports wagon, to deliver a paper while a 70-year-old woman was seated in the rear passenger seat.

An unknown man has then jumped out of a black Nissan SUV which was parked nearby and hopped into the driver’s seat of the couple’s vehicle.

The offender drove a short distance and apologised to the woman before dumping the vehicle and fleeing on foot through a nearby reserve.
