Police have charged a man after a Mounted Branch police officer was allegedly assaulted during a protest in Melbourne’s CBD last Saturday.

Detectives yesterday afternoon charged a 40-year-old Narre Warren South man with nine offences including assaulting a police officer, intentionally cause injury, throwing a missile (bollard) to injure and failing to comply with Chief Health Officer directions.

The charges relate to an alleged incident that occurred when a group of officers were patrolling on horseback on Swanston Street between Flinders Street and Flinders Lane about 12:15pm.

Police will allege the man picked up a traffic bollard and threw it in the direction of the officers with the bollard striking a female senior constable facing the other direction and unable to protect herself.

The man left the scene and the officer was treated for injuries to her neck and head, requiring ongoing medical treatment.

The alleged offender will appear before the Melbourne Magistrates Court today.
