With Rupert Murdoch’s right-wing Sky News Australia being suspended from YouTube for seven days, many people are asking why the broadcast regulator the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) does not also suspend Sky News transmission licence.

Sky News holds a pay-tv, not a terrestrial broadcast licence but uses regional broadcast stations to re-transmit its content. In these cases, the holder of the licence to broadcast is held by the TV station retransmitting Sky News and not News Corporation itself.

Here’s a quick guide to petitioning to have Sky News taken off your local TV station. We’ve used the Victorian town of Seymour to demonstrate.

  1. Visit https://web.acma.gov.au/pls/radcom/register_search.search_dispatcher
  2. Type in your town/postcode/district

  3. Scroll through and find your local WIN/PRIME/Sthn X station

  4. Click on the Licence # (far left column) and see where it takes you

  5. Then click on transmitter site at bottom of page

  6. Now you’ll have a list of all the transmitters from said site

  7. Now, all you need is to find out the transmitter site owner or lessee, (often your local council in regional areas). Now you have all the details you need to lobby your local council to stop using your rates to fund the transmitter site and petition the site owner(s) to take Sky News off the air.
