MELBOURNE.
The State Government has awarded Murrindindi Shire $5,000 funding as part of it’s Local History Grants Program for a cultural memoir of Taungurung Elder, Uncle Roy Patterson.
The Taungurung people were the First Australians of the rivers and mountains in the local district.
The Victorian Aboriginal Remembrance Committee will now be able to write about Uncle Roy to tell his, and his clans, story.
Over 6.4 million people visit Victoria’s museums, galleries, heritage sites and monuments every year, growing at 5.7 per cent annually over the last five years to March 2017.
Special Minister of State, Gavin Jennings sees the Local History Grants Program as part of putting dedicated community organisations first, who do a great job of collecting and preserving Victoria’s history.
“I want to congratulate the successful community groups and their fantastic local history projects. This funding will go a long way in bringing their projects to life,” Jennings said.
Nillumbik Shire also received a grant of $12,575 for their ‘Nillumbik Digital Heritage Guide,’ with Benalla Historical Society receiving $14,500 for the digitisation of Benalla Standard newspapers.
The Yarra Plenty Regional Library Service also received a $3,375 grant for ‘Whittlesea’s Dark Past.’
